(<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.arduino.cc\/hardware\/nano-every\/\">Arduino Every<\/a>). The connection to the display counter board is <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.arduino.cc\/learn\/communication\/wire\/\">I2C wire protocol<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/LogicBoard.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1512\" height=\"2016\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/LogicBoard.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1031\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A potentiometer is used to control speed. This is on the power line to the motor &#8211; not connected digitally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Potentiometer.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1509\" height=\"583\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Potentiometer.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1010\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The logic board reads a button to start and stop the device. This is connected on the I\/O pins to the arduino. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Buttons-and-screen.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"869\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Buttons-and-screen.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1011\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The arduino logic board triggers a scooter motor which drives the toothed belts connected to the axles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ScooterMotor.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1512\" height=\"2016\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ScooterMotor.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1009\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The axles hold cardboard kite handles held in with pad folder clips. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/AxleAndClip-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2016\" height=\"1512\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/AxleAndClip-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1014\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a second mechanism to oscillate the string guides to spread the string evenly across the handle. This stops bunching and slipping of the string off the handle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Oscillator.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1512\" height=\"2016\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Oscillator.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1024\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/StringGuides2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2016\" height=\"1512\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/StringGuides2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1015\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an axle tab with an optical detector board with source LED and detector that looks at the reflection off the shaft. The tab is covered with black from a texta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/TabAndSensor1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1667\" height=\"2204\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/TabAndSensor1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1023\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an input button for setting the desired number of meters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Length-toggle-button.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"464\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Length-toggle-button.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1016\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ardiuno system outputs the desired number of meters on the display. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Output-Display-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1384\" height=\"1225\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Output-Display-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1029\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>After the start button is pressed, the Ardiuno system counts the number of rotations from the optical sensor, does a ratio calculation to meters wound, and stops after the desired number of metres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The output display shows winding progress. (The strobing\/refresh of the display has caught the larger meter count in mid-refresh.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Output-Display.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1384\" height=\"1225\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Output-Display.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1025\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After completion the handle is removed from the clip and is nearly ready for shipping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/KiteHandleClipRemoval.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1512\" height=\"2016\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/KiteHandleClipRemoval.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1013\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the overall System. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/OverallWinder.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2016\" height=\"1512\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/OverallWinder.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1021\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br><br>This is the system running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"System Running\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9C8woDgAuQo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scale<\/strong><br>This has the capacity to do about 120-130 handles per hour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Engineering Iterations and Reflections:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This logic board is the first attempt, different to the second board shown further above.  On the first attempt, power glitches on the first attempt. The logic board at the top of the post has added capacitors to solve coupling problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/LogicBoardFirstAttempt.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1512\" height=\"2016\" src=\"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/LogicBoardFirstAttempt.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1020\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the issues encountered on early software development iterations was that the system would miss the exact matching target length and keep going even if the target length had been exceeded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is Dad&#8217;s workshop.
