{"id":1389,"date":"2025-04-05T03:55:34","date_gmt":"2025-04-04T16:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2025-12-13T10:52:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T23:52:17","slug":"thur-3-april-national-computer-museum-manchester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juliangamble.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/05\/thur-3-april-national-computer-museum-manchester\/","title":{"rendered":"Thur 3 April &#8211; National Computer Museum, Manchester\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An offshoot of the Bletchley Park museum, which leans more towards military stories, this Museum is a place for the stories of Britain&#8217;s computer Industry following World War 2. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They start with a largely working Bombe machine replica &#8211; ticking over to find combinations that might work against a particular encrypted message. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SwingAroundTheBombe2\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bnhWXI2ZQr4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside of a rotor, fine brushes made contact with the commutators. These were cleaned with tweezers by an operator. &#8211; because it was considered an unreliable bunch of wires. It had shift registers and branching instructions, but no memory. It was not general-purpose programmable. I am truly on the fence on this question.  (It seemed like a bunch of electronics to do statistical attack calculations, looking for the ordered pattern in the randomness of encryption possibilities.) He got notes from an Harry Fensom who worked on the original Colossus.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a profound historical parallel to the Biblical writings, where people don&#8217;t seek to preserve things by writing them down or publishing them, until or after the original people who experienced it were on their deathbeds roughly 40 years later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum also had a rebuild of the EDSAC computer. It was built for the Cambridge Math&#8217;s department. A one-off given to a Maths department. It was as slow as a human at calculations, but but resilient and less error-prone.
